Why Am I Watching Soccer?

Right now, I am watching the USA Women Soccer Team battle it out with the Japanese Women’s Soccer team. The score is USA -2, Japan -1. We are in the second half of play, and the Japanese are obviously being much more aggressive, challenging the American women.

This is the Gold Medal match.

Soccer has never held any appeal to me. I was never exposed to it as a child, and my children never showed any desire for the sport, or any other sport. My kids were all musical artists, their college educations were financed in good part with music scholarships. Bottom line, I had no love for soccer.

I am now riveted to my seat. These women, both American and Japanese, are keeping me fixed on a game that I don’t understand. What a game!

One of my problems is figuring out the game clock. Just what is gong on, here? We are down to the final few seconds and I don’t know what is going on, clock wise. What is a yellow card? Damn! The Japanese get another free kick.

What is this two minutes added on to the game? Now, Tobin Heath, USA, gets a free kick. Only a few seconds left. The Japanese foul with forty seconds left.

Japan attacks with ten seconds left. Unsuccessful. We have the two minutes, and the damned game is still not over.

Now, it is over.

USA wins the GOLD MEDAL!!!

I just may be hooked on soccer.

  1. WE WON GOLD!? HURRAH! I lived in Paris for 4 years and Munich for 1, so I know a little soccer and like it very much.
With the arms not involved, I call it the “Riverdance of sports!” 🙂 YOu’re right, we weren’t exposed to it, but when good players are on the field, it can get VERY exciting.
Or it can be VERY boring if nothing’s happening but seemingly only running back and forth and back and forth!
Glad you enjoyed the time watching. I wish I could have watched.

  2. I just got back from reading one of Mustang’s post. Good stuff. I was late in reading it, and did not engage as I ordinarily would. Glad you’re back. It looks like I may have found another sport to watch on the big TV.

  3. I got hooked on Soccer when I came to Venezuela twenty years ago. Outside of America and England, the sport is known as Futbol. Each half is 45 minutes. And they must play 45 minutes. So, for every delay due to penalties or injuries, that time is tacked on at the end of each half. When it’s World Cup, I am up at whatever hour to watch. It is a shame we are not getting any Olympic coverage here.

  4. Yeah. Imagine my confusion when the game had already gone 90 minutes, and it did not end. I finally got it figured out. Now, I gotta get a handle on what the various positions are, and who can and cannot do what, and when. Thanks.
